A truly original Aloha shirt

There's a relatively new man in my life, and he's stolen my heart.  He's my 1.5 year old nephew.  It's so sad that we live about 2,500 miles away from each other, but I try to get some face time with him over the phone.  For Chris' first Christmas, which was last year, I thought I'd make something from Hawaii that he might look cute in for photos.

There are a ton of cute little Aloha shirts I could've bought, but I wanted this shirt to be truly original.  So... I decided to design my own simple pattern, have it printed on fabric through Spoonflower, and sew that up into an Aloha shirt.  I chose a bright, fun, iconic snack that will make any local immediately salivate -- shave ice!  If you like it, you can order yourself some fabric in this print here.

The great thing about kids' clothes is that you don't need much fabric and the construction is much simpler.  For example, no easing of sleeves required for these tiny sleeves!  I sewed this fairly quickly, so I didn't take many photos of each step.  This is the basic shirt, which I then attached the collar to, added button holes and buttons, and hemmed.  I'd love to show you photos of my nephew wearing this shirt because as cute as this shirt is, it's no match for my Chris.  Unfortunately, his parents want to protect his privacy and don't want photos of him strewn all over the Internet.  You'll just have to trust me ;)
