Mama's Quilt

When I started sewing last year, I wanted to make all sorts of things for family and friends.  One of the things I wanted to attempt was a quilt.  I started out slowly, looking for fabric at Savers that would go together.  In the end, though, I decided I should make it in time for Christmas, which meant I couldn't just drag my feet in finding fabric.  I ended up finding two large pieces of fabric that made for a cute, small quilt to match my Mom's newly painted bedroom.

I must say this first attempt at a quilt turned out okay, but there's SO much room for improvement.  First of all, sewing all the squares together was no problem.  For a little bit of interest, I sewed little blue triangles at opposite corners of each square.  It was tedious but not hard.  The hard part is working with something that is so huge it pulls your fabric while sewing and makes you hot while it's draped all over you.  When I was finally done putting all the squares together, I did some basting of the top layer to the batting then quilted in diagonal lines across the squares.  Apparently, I didn't do enough basting because by the time I was ready to bind my quilt, the top and bottom layers were a little crooked, which made binding more difficult.

I had no idea how to bind the quilt.  I just read some online blogs and figured something out.  Because I hadn't done a good enough job of lining everything up, there were portions where the binding missed the top or bottom, making for a really sloppy looking quilt.  I had to basically sew over some parts just to keep everything together.  Luckily it's not obvious unless you start looking at the seams.  Still, I felt bad that I didn't do a good job on that.

In the end, the quilt also turned out to be too small for the bed.  You can see the quilt doesn't hang over the edge of the bed:

Mom seemed to like it, so I was proud to have made something useful for her.  Maybe once this wedding business is over, I'll get some motivation back to attempt another one.
